MoMeD Summer school 2024

MoMeD Summer school is an annual event which brings MoMeD PhD students and supervisors from different research environments and centers together. The two-day event offers an opportunity to network, to share knowledge, to hear about research of your peers and to attend workshops of your choice on scientific or transferable skills topics.

Registration for students and supervisors is closed.

30-31 May 2024, including overnight stay in shared 2-bed rooms.

You will be able to write the name of your preferred roommate upon registration and we will do our best to accommodate your wishes.

The MoMeD Summer School 2024 will feature:

  • Scientific presentations from 3rd year PhD students
  • Poster sessions in smaller groups to practice the skill of poster presentation
  • Open poster sessions to network and discuss science with all MoMeD students and attending supervisors
  • Workshop of choice
  • Social activities and networking with your colleagues

All meals are provided. You will be able to indicate special dietary requests upon registration

Summer school is a course which gives ECTS, so remember to sign up at Graduate school course catalogue AND on this webpage to submit your abstract. Sign up deadline for both webpages is the same - 10 April. Your registration will be complete ONLY when you have registered at both places.

Each student has to attend one workshop of choice. There will be 4 workshops to choose from.

Workshop 1: Critical thinking: Big biomedical data, statistical analysis, and AI

In this workshop, Lars Juhl Jensen will go through examples of how to analyze large biomedical data. He will discuss both commonly used statistical methods (e.g. rank-based statistics and correction for multiple hypothesis testing), more uncommon methods (e.g. bootstrapping), and AI-based methodologies (e.g. for missing value imputation). The workshop will have a strong focus on how to avoid the common pitfalls of data analysis, since these are common across approaches.

After the workshop you will know more about:

  • Ways to do statistical tests when data does not follow standard distributions
  • When and how to perform correction for multiple testing
  • How to prioritize candidates in high-throughput screens
  • Why you should worry more about systematic biases and less about random noise
  • Why data biases are particularly problematic in AI — also outside biology

Workshop teacher: Professor Lars Juhl Jensen, Group Leader, Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, SUND, UCPH

Workshop 2: Mindfulness

The purpose of this 2-hour workshop on mindfulness is to introduce the participants to mindfulness and give the participants the opportunity to try mindfulness exercises themselves. Trying mindfulness on your own body is the best way to understand what it’s all about and gives a greater insight into how it is experienced and what effect it can have to train mindfulness regularly. The exercises in the workshop originate from the research-based 8-week course in mindfulness: Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction, MBSR.

Workshop teacher: Jacob Sander Bojsen, MSc, Mindfulness Every Day

Workshop 3: Strategic Networking

Whether you seek collaborators or your next position – be it in academia or industry, networking will help you achieve your goal more swiftly. Why not, then, approach it strategically? In this workshop, we shall delve into how to strategize your networking efforts, enabling you to attain your career objectives more rapidly. We will explore:

  • How to connect with individuals
  • Coffee meetings
  • How you can provide value

It is crucial to recognize that networking is not about selling oneself; rather, it is about contributing value to others and fostering long-term relationships.

Workshop teacher: Diana Lund Nordstrøm, Dual Career Consultant, International Staff Mobility, UCPH

Workshop 4: Supervision & Leadership

The purpose of this workshop is to provide you with insight into various trends in modern leadership thinking, primarily for use in your practice as supervisors. It will give you conversational tools and methods to base and organize your supervision on.

The workshop will alternate between presentations, exercises, conversations, and reflection.

Workshop teacher: Trille Frodelund Lykke, Business Psychologist and Partner, New Stories Consulting ApS
